Groundless

When I held your face in my hands, I saw life itself beaming. I had never seen it up close before – a golden brown warmth emanating from an endless depth – and I smiled too simply for an energy this profound.

I wanted to get a good look at you, take our time so as not to be overwhelmed; and yet time quickened. I listened to your heart beat, my ear against your chest as if it were a vault – yep, there’s love in there.

It is beyond your touch and taste, the smell of cologne on your white button down. My words don’t stand a chance – I can still feel you changing me.

There is no easy way to know life like this, intimate, but perhaps it is the only way we can say goodbye, and be grateful.
