When Life catches up, breathless and wheezing,
tired of stumbling near your heels, and grasping
miserably for the sleeve of your t-shirt
— wait up —
It still has the patience to endure
your reaction when it grabs your hand
and shows you where you’ve been.
— look —
It smiles vigorously, standing now
by the side of Victory, and kneels
as you kneel, on the heels of surrender.
— dear child —
It weeps as you grieve, on the metro,
drinking coffee, doing yoga, looking at you
looking at a baby laughing
— it’s ok —
And seeing a seeing-eye dog
kiss the chin of its owner; knowing
you have a dog you can no longer see.
— shhhh —
Sometimes, it is about the destination.
When Life catches up, it reminds you
where you’ve planted a heaven in the earth.
