Sometimes you just don’t fit
into your bridesmaids dresses.
Sometimes you get knocked out
by fresh air, and submit your Sunday
errands to falling asleep on the couch.
Sometimes you drink a lot of coffee
and don’t actually fall asleep.
Sometimes you lose
your mind accounting lost causes,
like financial case studies
on a Saturday afternoon.
Sometimes you welcome a stranger
into your apartment out of kindness,
and kick him out five minutes later,
out of concern for committing a serious mistake.
Sometimes you make mistakes.
Sometimes someone believes you are someone else
and assumes you will help carry their bags
full of breakfast croissants and pastries.
Sometimes you play along anyway,
correcting them only when you take off
your sunglasses and look them in the eyes.
Sometimes you wear a face
indicative of incredible boredom
and severe disengagement.
Sometimes you are too fatigued to care
and explain that you’re just practicing
the art of thinking deeply.
But sometimes you are just unimpressed,
and smile anyway.
Sometimes you’re a hunter
learning how to farm and cultivate
a land whose fruit rots on the vine.
Sometimes you sharpen your tools
just in case, and enjoy the sun
on your skin, the dirt on your hands,
and the rain that is sure to come clean.
Sometimes you are the one
that grows in the meantime.
Sometimes you bake the broccoli
in the brownie,
and call it a real treat.
